Senior Director of People and Culture
About the Role
The Sr. Director of People and Culture is a senior-level leadership role within Cities United, reporting to the Deputy of People and Culture. The Sr. Director of People and Culture will take an active role in supervising the People and Culture team, leading and overseeing the development and implementation of the organization’s human resources, institutional policies and procedures, convening and gatherings, and healing centered engagement. This role will be responsible for ensuring the confidentiality of personnel and organizational proprietary information. The Sr. Director of People and Culture will work closely with senior and executive leadership across the organization. These functions, including but not limited to the duties and responsibilities listed below, are essential to positively impacting the viability, security, and sustainability of the organization while cultivating a culture of care and growth for internal staff in alignment with Cities United’s mission to support safe, healthy, and whole communities across the country.

Key Responsibilities
Under the direction of and in collaboration with the Deputy of People and Culture:
- Provide direct supervision, performance management, and coaching to Directors within the Department of People and Culture, focused on the department’s focus areas: human resources, operations, convening and gatherings, and healing centered engagement.
- Leads recruitment and hiring processes, ensuring equity and diversity in hiring practices.
- Manages all aspects of the employee lifecycle. Develops, executes, and oversees onboarding and retention strategies for a positive employee experience.
- Develop people strategies to deliver on organizational expectations and outcomes.
- Collaborates with leadership to forecast staffing needs and workforce growth plans.
- Oversee development and implementation of organizational policies, procedures, security protocols, information technology, and logistics, including travel.
- Oversee development and execution of Cities United’s annual convening and gatherings, including internal staff retreats.
- In collaboration with the Deputy of People and Culture, develop and manage the department’s budget and expenditures.
- Prepare briefing materials of the department’s performance and organizational impact for the Deputy of People and Culture and the Department of Impact.
- Track overall department progress, recommend proactive and responsive strategies, and negotiate any issues in partnership with the Deputy of People and Culture.
- Under the direction of the Deputy of People and Culture, oversee the development and execution of Cities United’s healing centered engagement, including integration within the comprehensive public safety plan framework and partner jurisdictions.
- In collaboration with the Deputy of People and Culture, lead the development and implementation of Cities United’s Black Centric efforts.

Qualifications
- 5+ years of software engineering experience
- Strong proficiency in Python, Java, or Go
- Experience with distributed systems and microservices
- Solid understanding of database design and optimization
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Experience with Kubernetes and containerization
- Background in machine learning or data engineering
- Open source contributions
- Experience leading technical projects
